Ronald Brautigam
Light and shade in old Vienna. Schubert’s friends bet him that he couldn’t write an overture as good as one of Rossini’s, so he simply ran one off there and then! His sunny “little C major” symphony took rather more work, but you’d hardly know it; it positively bubbles with happiness – and, of course, those unforgettable Schubert melodies. It’s all a world away from Beethoven’s darkest and most powerful piano concerto – though you can certainly hear why Schubert hero-worshipped Beethoven above all his contemporaries. Expect conductor Andrew Manze, and hugely respected soloist Ronald Brautigam, to bring out all its drama and emotion.
