Mendelssohn was one of music’s great travellers – he even made it to Birmingham! And there’s no better way to launch a concert than with his Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage: all the fun of his Hebrides overture, but with none of the seasickness. And then we’re off – first to the brooding northern landscape of Sibelius’ impassioned Violin Concerto (with the stunning Janine Jansen as soloist), then to the sunlit Alipne meadows of Brahms’ happiest symphony. Lullabies, horn-calls and jubilant trumpets all come together in some of the loveliest music Brahms ever wrote; charismatic guest-conductor Ilan Volkov should make an entertaining guide.
