The promotion of music as a life-enhancing tool is at the heart of THSH’s work. Symphony Hall has a long history of working with 5-18 year olds, offering many ways to participate and develop skills whilst supporting teachers and group leaders. Town Hall helps us to extend this work by providing additional performance, training and lifelong learning opportunities for under 5s, families and senior citizens from all walks of life. We expect to reach more than 20,000 people every year.

We currently run five programmes of activity:

The Science of Sound

This programme looks at the acoustics, architecture and engineering of both auditoria and the music, material, maths and mechanics of the organs.

Singing

Our singing programme supports and adds value to existing city-wide singing provision
by providing regular large-scale choral events for children and young people, an
ongoing outreach programme of singing in schools, and adult training opportunities for the development of conducting and rehearsal skills.

Discovering our Heritage

This aspect of our work tells the story of Birmingham’s social, political, musical and architectural history through the medium of Town Hall and Symphony Hall via adult learning programmes and support to the National Curriculum.

Inspiring Performance

We welcome children, young people and families by providing tailor-made performances and performance opportunities, maximising behind the scenes and professional performance-led acitivites and delivering a year-round programme of outreach work.

Technology in Music

These projects use technology in fun and innovative ways to inspire children and young people to explore music, the arts and their own imagination!
Working within our unique concert halls and our cutting edge Patrick Musictech Studio we strive to integrate technology with artists and performances to create an inspiring musical experience for all involved.
